I watched the Series finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender last July[post] , but this week I finally finished watching the whole series straight through. My feelings haven't changed, I absolutely love this show. If you watch a couple minutes you'll see why. I was feeling a little childish, because my torrent was taken right from Nickelodeon i would see the Y7 rating for every episode. Even though I love cartoons and the like, I felt kind of ashamed for a hot second. This shit is good though and if all childrens shows were this good I'd watch them all the time. I could go on and on about the awesome writing and character development, but I won't. Take my word on it: it's flipping awesome.
Because its Hollywood they are making it into a movie. It's going to be directed by M. Night Shamalyan and maybe that will be okay because he's not writing the story and his kids really love the show and maybe will stop him from messing it up. There have already been some issues with casting. Apparently in the begining they had an all caucasian cast and fans were like hellz no.
So fans have this campaign going call Aang Ain't White (nice name right? y/y?). I checked it out and generally I'm inclined to agree. If I was little and was like omgKatara! and I get to get the movie theater and the actress looks nothing like her i would be really really disappointed. Hell im old and it makes me sad. You are getting relatively unknown actors, why under represent Asian/Pacific/Inuit peoples? It sucks and makes me kind of sad. It'll be weird having a world culturally Asian and having all white kids running around in it. So the guy who played Jasper in Twilight is going to be Sokka and Zuko is going to be played by Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire. Other casting here. M. Night should know better, why not show people some culture and that non-white kids can have lead roles too? This isn't just cosplay.
Maybe it isn't a big deal, but it sure as hell isn't right.
